Brabham, Simonsen win Bahrain GT Festival.
26/11/2004
Crash.net columnist David Brabham took victory in the inaugural Bahrain GT Festival, sharing the Coopers Ale-backed Ferrari 550 Maranello with 'honorary Australian' Allan Simonsen.
The pairing secured the title by winning the hour-long final, in which all teams had to carry out a compulsory driver change. Simonsen started the race from pole position, the team having won two of the three qualifying heats, and established an early advantage before Brabham took over behind the wheel.
As usual, the biggest threat to success came from the DDO Saleen of Dominique Dupuy and Francois Fiat, as well as the two Vipers fielded by Force One and Larbre, and it was the latter that came through to sneak second place for Frederic Dedours and Frederic Makowiecki in the closing stages, with the French Saleen taking third.
The GT2 class went to the Farnbacher Porsche of Patrick Long and Lars Nielson, which saw off the JMB Ferrari that had dogged it all week, with GT3 going the way of the Larbre Competition Porsche, completing a useful race for the French team.
