Brabham’s F3 title wait finally ends Brabham’s F3 title wait finally ends
18/01/2010

It may have taken some 20 years, but sportscar ace David Brabham has finally received the British F3 International Series trophy for the title he secured back in 1989.

Brabham beat off the challenge of Allan McNish to lift the title, but wasn’t confirmed as champion until the following February – meaning he was never presented with the trophy.

However, the Australian was given a surprise at the annual Autosport International show in Birmingham when he was presented with the trophy on the main stage by Highcroft Racing team boss Duncan Dayton, who had flown in from the USA to support Brabham’s Karting Challenge.

“I got presented with a trophy – although not the real one as they’ll be sending me that – from back in 1989,” Brabham said. “When Allan McNish and I were dicing for the British F3 title, they didn’t know who had won the title until February and I ended up winning.

“I never got a trophy for winning that title and it is definitely one that has been missing from my collection. They are making one to give to me and it means a lot.

“I had no idea it was going to happen and it was great for Duncan to be there to give it to me.”
